On display at EMD’s 75th Anniversary Open House is Long Island Rail Road DE30AC 401. Long Island 401 is the second of 24 DE30AC locomotives built for the LI. These passenger locomotives were built in 1997 and 1998 by Electro-Motive Division in the Super Steel Plant in Schenectady, NY. DM30AC locomotives use electric third rail while the diesel engine is off, enabling the locomotive to utilize the East River Tunnels into New York Penn Station. DM30AC locomotives differ from the similar DM30DC locomotives in that they have third rail contact shoes, permitting direct service from non-electrified lines in eastern Long Island via the western electrified main lines all the way to New York City's Penn Station.
