Pinning on "The Flyer". With morning servicing completed, Nevada Northern's Consolidation #81 stands in front of the railroad's coaling and water towers in the East Ely Yard, ready to pick up her train for the day. The "Yard Goat", Alco RS-3 #109 has already withdrawn the Steptoe Flyer consist from its indoor storage in the RIP Building and has brought it out to meet the 81 at mid-yard. Shortly, the 81 will back up and pin on these cars, pump up the air and be ready for a morning photo session up on the High Line north of Ely. In past years, the power on a fast passenger train like the "Flyer" would typically be Locomotive #40, with its tall driving wheels and sleeker lines, but with the 40 down for a 1,472 Service Day Inspection, the newly restored 81 and her green boiler jacket made an excellent substitute.
