Remarks & Notes |
With the train "Le Vapeur Swiss Express" the large mountain 241 P # 17 is on the last leg from Basel to Mulhouse. The powerful four cylinder compound 4-8-2 with about 4000 HP and 120 km p.h. max. speed was built by Schneider/Le Creusot/France between 1947 and 1949 and in service for the SNCF till 1966. Since 2006 operational again the locomotive belongs to the association "Les Chemins de fer du Creusot" and was on a visit in Switzerland. This visually imposing locomotive was based on the design principles of André Chapelon and can be considered one of the highlights of steam locomotive development in Europe. Although derived from the 241 C series, the revised steam engine gave it about 20% more power than the latter. This was made possible by consistent reworking of the steam paths in the steam engine (large-diameter exhaust pipes with few bends), a perfectly balanced four-cylinder compound engine, and the use of a double Kylchap induced draft system.
