A mountain EAST of Mt. Washington? After taking a few sunset photos on the west side of the summit of Mt. Washington, I wandered back over to the Cog Railway platform, which is on the east side, to shoot a few dusk photos of the train and chat with the crew. After taking just one frame, and looking at it for a few seconds, I was quite puzzled at what I saw. It looked for all the world like there was a very large mountain to the east. Having lived in New England all my life and having flown over the White Mountains of New Hampshire many times, I knew for fact that the terrain to the east falls off pretty rapidly and that no such mountain exists. After chuckling for a few seconds at my bewilderment, Cog Railway Engineer Joe Eggleston wandered over with a big, wide smile on his face and explained the phenomenon to me. What I saw....and what you see here to the left of the locomotive, is the SHADOW of Mt. Washington being projected on the haze layer to the east, by the fading sunlight to the west. It was yet another one of the many unique phenomenon that occur on this mountain, and one that only the folks who make their living up here regularly get to see.
Beautiful mountain scenery has made this small state a draw for rail buffs to ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway and the Conway Scenic, among others.
