Remarks & Notes |
Western Pacific Wood Caboose #641 at Cannery Row -Weighing in at approximately 20 tons, the steel car with a wood sided exterior and locally known as Western Pacific Wood Caboose #WP 641. The car was built in 1916 as an outside braced boxcar and later converted into a waycar by the WP around 1940. The car currently sits on a section of rail located on what was once a railroad right of way paralleling the bay between Prescott Avenue and Hoffman Avenue and adjacent to was once a working seaside wharf in the Cannery Row section of Monterey. The ROW is currently referred to as the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail and to the "trained eye,” there is no shortage of these level walkways on the hill sloping from Lighthouse Avenue to the waters edge in and around Cannery Row. |
