Remarks & Notes |
Cogwheel railcar Bhe 1/2 # 21 of the Pilatus Bahnen, first of the series built in 1937 when the line was electrified, is running up the mountain above the 55 meter long Fleimen tunnel as train CC 25 from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm. In the valley is the Alpnachersee, part of Lake Lucerne. The world's steepest cogwheel railway with grade up to 48.0 % is using the unique Locher system. In the Locher rack system, the cogwheels are mounted horizontally on the carriage and engage laterally in the rack from both sides as a pair in each case. The wheel flange below the cogwheels guides the carriages on the so-called "Vautrin rail" and prevents them from lifting off even on gradients of up to 48%.
The rack system is named after its inventor Eduard Locher. Eduard Locher is the builder of the Pilatus Railway and came up with the novel system especially for the Pilatus Railway. Only in this way was it possible to access Mount Pilatus from Alpnachstad by the most direct route.
