Early sales of EMD SD70Ms from the 70 Series was slow at first, with a lot of floor space at the builder devoted to erecting A.C. traction SD70MACs. One exception was a small order of 25 SD70Ms for Southern Pacific in 1994. On December 11, 1994, new SP SD70M No. 9814 leads an ore train on Wisconsin Central at Shops Yard in North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
