"Toto, we're not in Utah anymore." Kyle train LISA (Limon, CO - Salina, KS) works east through Edson, KS hauling one hundred loaded grain hoppers. These former Utah Railway oddballs, which were originally built by MPI as MK5000Cs with Catepillar engines were eventually repowered with prime movers salvaged from SD50s and reclassed as MK50-3s. Genesee & Wyoming moved all 6 examples of this type to the Kyle after the Utah stopped running coal trains over Soldier Summit in Utah, making these unique units surplus. Of the 6 MK50-3s in existence, all are on the Kyle, and 4 are active. One, the UTAH 5005, wears G&W orange. All others are in the scheme seen here.
