The city of Independence has a decent railroad display on the northside of town. The Buchanan County Tourism Visitor Center has the Chicago and Rock Island Depot and the Illinois Central Depot restored together. The 0-8-0 steam engine is a former GTW that came from Northwestern Steel & Wire (So the research claims). in 1996 the IC Depot was turned 90 degrees and moved some, above the 3rd unit. This depot dates back to 1892, and the IC arrived in Independence in 1859. The daily Waterloo to Gary, IN, freight blast by at 50 mph with 8000 feet of Iowa traffic.
