General Motors Electro-Motive Division constructed 63 GP60Ms, all for the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe. They were the first new locomotives delivered in the Santa Fe's then-new "Superfleet" scheme, which returned their popular red and silver colors to the railway's newest motive power. For years they were found on the head-end of the Santa Fe's hottest intermodal trains, but over time, and after becoming the property of Santa Fe-successor Burlington Northern Santa Fe, they were downgraded for use on non-mainline trains. In their rebuilding, the desktop control stand was replaced with an upright one, as well as the replacement of the EMD Mod 3 microprocessor with a Q-Tron microprocessor, as well as other modifications. These formerly mainline locomotives thus became more suitable for local service and yard work, as seen by BNSF GP60M-3s 158 and 149 (both ex-ATSF, same numbers) awaiting their next assignment at the La Mirada Yard.
