EMD continued to improve is design of the North American cab (also known as a comfort cab) when it unveiled the ‘WhisperCab’ on Conrail SD60I No. 5544 in April 1993. Designed to improve noise and vibration, the ‘I’ for “isolated’ cab rides on a cushion of rubber mounts that isolates it from the frame and hood of the locomotive. Conrail’s 80 SD60Is were the only one built, and 46 went to Norfolk Southern with the Conrail acquisition (split with CSX) on June 1, 1999. Led by NS SD60I No. 6757, NS train 38Q smokes it up going through Vance, Tennessee, on the NS’s Knoxville East End District on May 13, 2014.
