Lost Then Found. Chesapeake Western 662 (DS-4-4-660, Baldwin, 12/1946) spent its life on the CW until being retired in 1964, and was then sent to a scrap yard in Roanoke, Virginia to be cut up, the end. Just kidding! The "Lost Engines Of Roanoke" refers to a group of four steam engines (NW 917, 1118, 1134, and 1151), two diesels (CW 662 & 663) and some other equipment that was hiding in the overgrown weeds of the Virginia Scrap Iron and Metal Company. A long term effort of preservationists resulted in everything being transported off of the property. The Roanoke Chapter NRHS completed a cosmetic restoration of CW 662, and on July 7, 2012, it was unveiled at the Virginia Museum of Transportation, where it remains and was photographed on November 18, 2022.
