Remarks & Notes
Classic Helmstetter's. In a scene that is a bit reminiscent of the classic Bill Price photos of the Western Maryland Railroad, a heavy, articulated freight locomotive makes its way around the sweeping Helmstetter's Curve (MP 171.2) in LaVale, MD, headed west on the Connellsville Sub with a short coal drag. Instead of a Western Maryland, 4-6-6-4 Challenger however, we're looking at the former Chesapeake & Ohio Locomotive #1309, which is an H-6 Class, 2-6-6-2 compound Mallet locomotive. This engine was built in 1949 and had a short career of only 7 years on the C&O, eventually ending up in a museum in Baltimore as a static display. Purchased from the museum in 2014 and restored over a period of several years, the engine now runs in tourist service on the present-day Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which operates on a section of the old Connellsville line from Cumberland to Frostburg. Normally adorned with the Western Maryland Fireball paint scheme, the 1309 was specially re-lettered in its original C&O livery for a February, 2023 photo shoot, organized by Lerro Photography.

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
