Mountaintop Station.
Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway locomotive 29, along with cars 29A, B, & C, are seen at the station atop Pikes Peak during an afternoon snowstorm. At 14,115 feet, Pikes Peak Summit is the fifth-highest railway in the world, and the highest in North America. The 8.9-mile journey up the mountain sees grades of up to 26%.
The locomotive and trainset is one of three built by Stadler Rail this year for the railway, which underwent a top-to-bottom rebuild over the last three years - literally starting at the top of the mountain and building entirely new track down to the bottom! The three new trainsets compliment the railroad's aging Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works railcars on the line.
While Colorado's narrow gauge steam railroads are the major draw, the state is also home to several diesel-powered tourist railroads that take passengers to the Royal Gorge and other sites.
