The 4-6-2 "Pacific" express train steamlocomotive 01 # 519 of the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn e.V. (EFZ) in Rentwertshausen, former border station between German Democratic Republic (DDR) and Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD). The locomotive was built by Henschel in 1936 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn as 01 # 186. The 01 # 519 now owned by the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn (EFZ) belongs to the 01.5 steam locomotive class, the swan song of steam locomotive reconstructions of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) of the GDR. A total of 35 class 01 locomotives underwent extensive reconstruction in the early 1960s. While the initial plan was to install only a welded new boiler, the state of preservation of the selected locomotives eventually forced extensive rebuilds that turned the machines into new vehicles in large parts. The reconditioned boilers were supplied by the Halberstadt works and installed at the Meiningen works. During the rebuild, the boiler was raised, the top of the boiler was covered with a continuous dome, and the cabs were replaced with new welded cabs. The locomotives rebuilt in this way had little in common with their original appearance, so after the rebuild they were given the new designation 01.5. Starting with the 01 # 519 (rebuilt 1963/64), the locomotives received oil main firing, the remaining machines were retrofitted accordingly in 1965/66, only six machines retained the grate firing. The 01 # 519 (formerly 01 # 186) began its new life as an oil-fired locomotive on March 1, 1964 at Bw Erfurt P. Further stations were Wittenberge, again Erfurt and finally Saalfeld from June 1, 1973. It ended its active career there on October 2, 1982. This was followed by conversion to a coal-fired heating locomotive and she began producing heat as a stationary heating unit at VEB Brauerei Greifswald at the end of 1982. This service ended in October 1988 and she was to be scrapped the following year. She was rescued at the last minute with her purchase by the Liechtenstein tourist company Jelka, followed by an extensive main inspection, which was not completed until January 31, 1991. After its transfer to Haltingen in Baden, it remained parked there. Finally, EFZ managed to lease the locomotive from Easter 1995 onwards and was able to acquire it permanently in spring 1996. For operation on DB routes, Indusi and a train path radio were installed in 1995. Intensive service in Germany from Basel to Hamburg followed with a best mark in 1997 with a mileage of about 22,000 km. Its deadline in May 2007 then sent it to the siding for a few years, but EFZ began a new main inspection in November 2011. With a lot of in-house work and extensive boiler work, this dragged on for almost four years. Finally, 01 519 returned to active service on October 9, 2015, and today can once again be admired in front of numerous special trains.
