CNW 4540 is in Oelwein Shops in the process of getting a chopped nose, new plow, major mechanical overhaul and a new paint job. C&NW had an aggressive program of revitalizing its large stable of GP7s and GP9s, many bought new, but a large number acquired used. CNW 4540 began life as CNW 1738, built in July 1957. The unit was later retired and sold to Western Rail Inc., becoming WRIX 4540 and put to work at Cascade Grain, Clatskanie, OR.
