It is pretty crazy to see how much westbound trains gain in elevation in a short distance climbing Mullan Pass. Here a coal train crawls along with 4 MRL manned helpers pushing mid-train. If you look at the top right corner, the helpers can be seen in the distance a ways below the head end power in elevation. The 3x4x1 powered train loops around one of the many horseshoe curves in the 17 mile climb to the top.
One of the helper sets out of Helena had a BNSF 4700's helping out. Seems likes there was 4 sets of helpers being used pretty regularly. This train is a couple miles from the top and the tunnel as they near Skyline. |
