Remarks & Notes |
The now annulled Norfolk Southern wood chip train passes the Amtrak station in Columbia, South Carolina. The train ran from a mill on the old Columbia & Greenville in nearby Newberry to what is currently an Evergreen paper plant in Canton, North Carolina. The route kept changing as NS kept abandoning parts of their line. The train had to start coming back into Columbia instead of going the more direct route up the W Line when NS mothballed Saluda. The log mill closed down in recent years curtailing this train altogether. Evergreen had to find a new way to get their chips. And, finally, it was recently announced that the Evergreen plant in Canton would soon shut down. |
