"200 Miles of Engineering Impossibilities"
Mink Harbour is the perfect illustration of what Van Horne was attempting to describe with his famous quote about the difficulties of building the CPR along the north shore of Lake Superior. Here the Mink Tunnel is carved out of a massive rock face, slide fences have been put in place for falling rocks and ice, multiple retaining walls have been built to combat erosion, and a large fill can all be seen in this frame. It's no wonder that it took approximately 12,000 men and 500 horses over a span of two years to finish this segment of the transcon back in 1884/5.
