Remarks & Notes |
Cumberland Mountain, TN The four and half miles of 2.5% grade make this one of the toughest grades on any mainline in America. The west slope presents an almost equally tough 2.3% grade. CSX bases a set of pusher engines at Cowan, TN to help trains up to and thru the 2228 foot Cumberland Mountain Tunnel. The train here is train 210 and will pull the hill without a manned push as it is powered up with a mid-train DPU. The train puts on quite a show as it climbs with a thunderous echo thru the deep pre-civil war cut and stone work at the Big Hormady Cut. Note the pipe over the tracks above the auto rack, this pipe carries a stream (sometimes dry) over the railroad. |
