Mixed to Mt. Union. A young couple pauses to take in the passage of an East Broad Top mixed train that is passing under the iconic McMullins Summit Bridge, on a northbound run to Mt. Union, PA. For nearly a century, the EBT was glue that held the economy together in rural Huntingdon County, bringing the coal produced by the region to market and providing jobs and transportation. It all came to an end in the mid-1950s, when the US economy transitioned from coal as a primary fuel to gas and oil, which were cheaper and cleaner.
This image was captured during an April, 2023 photo shoot on the East Broad Top Railroad, which featured the newly-restored Locomotive #16, seen here, which was the first steam locomotive to be restored to operation under the new EBT Foundation.
A look at the one-time coal-hauler, which ran as a tourist railroad for decades and finally ceased operations in 2011. The album includes photos from an October 2010 charter as well as images from the very last Fall Spectacular in October of 2011.
