The cogwheel railway "Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen" is part of the Appenzeller Bahnen since 2006. The 1,9 kilometer long line wtih a gauge of 1,2 meter and electrified with 600 V DC was opened as combined adhesion/rack railway in 1958. Before there was a funicular built in 1896 from Ruderbach to Walzenhausen and a short tramway line between Rheineck and Ruderbach. The 10,7 meter long railcar BDeh 1/2 # 1 with name "Liseli" has 24 seats on wooden benches and left Rheineck about 1 minute before as train 6161 of the line S26 and will reach the begin of the cogwheel section in Ruderbach in a few seconds, to start the ascent to Walzenhausen, with Riggenbach and von Roll rack system. The railcar was built in 1958 by SLM, FFA and BBC. The Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen will be modernised in 2026 as fully automatic, driverless cogwheel railway with a new car and train protection system from StadlerRail.
