After Amtrak's "Coast Starlight" stuck a water truck in Moorpark CA on June 28, Amtrak needed to ferry some replacement Superliners to Los Angeles. On July 3 Amtrak train 3, the "Southwest Chief," was pulling more cars than usual, and running 8 hours 5 minutes behind schedule. The P42DCs (11, 196 and 30) had the normal eight cars in tow, along with four deadheading cars. Naturally, the last four cars (diner, coach, lounge, diner) were deadheading and unoccupied, but I could get used to these longer long-distance trains. (Fullerton, California – July 3, 2023)
