The Zephyr At Salt Creek. On July 27, 2020, the Amtrak California Zephyr (Train 6) was lengthened by 2 cars as Webb Rail's former New York Central "Babbling Brook" and Northern Pacific "313" were holding the markers. In spite of the very isolated appearance of this trackage near Mack, Colorado, it is near Interstate 70, the first paved road it passes after many miles in the mountains. The back-to back pair of P42DCs (192/39) led a 10-car total consist across this rugged terrain from Emeryville, California towards Chicago, Illinois.
Two Amtrak routes serve the Centennial State. The California Zephyr's route through Moffat Tunnel and along the Colorado River goes from one end of the state to the other. The Southwest Chief cuts across the southeast corner.
