The Yorktown Power Station was constructed in 1957 and powered approximately 285,000 homes on the Virginia Peninsula. The Dominion Energy power plant had a net generating capacity of 1,141 megawatts provided by three power generating units. Units 1 & 2 were coal fired and unit 3 was oil fired. In 2019 the completion of Skiffes Creek connector project, providing the peninsula with energy from the Surry Nuclear Power Station, made coal burning at the Yorktown Plant obsolete. Oil burning Unit 3 is tentatively scheduled for shutdown in 2023.
