Operations were a bit unsettled in the months following the CSX and NS split and takeover of Conrail. Due to a backlog of trains and a shortage of crews on the River Subdivision, certain low-priority trains were routinely operated over the NYS&W between Ridgefield Park, NJ and Syracuse, NY. ML-401 was one of those regular "detour" moves and it is seen skirting the Charlotteburg Reservoir on a hazy summer afternoon. During this time, Conrail-format symbols were still being used by both CSX and NS. Included in the consist is leased GP40-3CLC HLCX 4415. This unit spent quite a bit of time on the NYS&W in the early-mid 90s when it was numbered HLCX 665.
