NRG’s Will County Generating Station in Romeoville, IL owned 2 EMD SD20 locomotive’s. WCCH 1801 and 1802. Those SD20's were used to haul coal trains in and out of the plant from the staging yard where Union Pacific delivered trains to them. The days of coal at Midwestern Energy’s Will County Generating Station have came to an end in June 2022, as the rumors of NRG retiring the coal-fired plant were true. The fate of the SD20’s is still up in the air with many rumor’s floating around of their fate. The 1802 sits stored inside the retired power plant in Romeoville, while the 1801 is seen here sitting under the night sky, and also stored at Hanson Material Service’s facility in Lockport. Seeing these SD20’s pull coal trains was always a nice treat. One year later after the coal-fired plant was retired, still being stored in August 2023, time will tell what’s next for these SD20’s.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
