A Little Extra Up Front. Amtrak Train 56 (Vermonter) was passing over the Pelham Bay Railroad Bridge in the Bronx, New York on Thursday, August 31, 2023 with AMTK 639 (ACS-64) leading AMTK 100 (50th Anniversary/Midnight Blue, P42DC) and Metroliner Cab Car 9634. The Amtrak 100 is one of several locomotives painted for Amtrak's 50th Anniversary in 2021. This train is often used to transfer equipment to New Haven, Connecticut, as the electric motor will be replaced with a diesel for the remainder of the trip to St. Albans, Vermont. New Haven is one of three Amtrak locations where scheduled engine changes take place for trains that are under way.
The successor to the Montrealer, the Vermonter runs between St. Albans, Vt., and Washington, DC. Much of the northern part of the route runs along the Connecticut and White Rivers.
