| It is pretty crazy how filthy the Helena Helpers get by shoving thru the Mullan Tunnel. The tunnel was originally built in 1883 at 3879' long. 400 feet at the west end was taken out as a part of an enlargement project in 2009. With the helper mainly cut-in in the middle of the trains, the tunnel fill with heavy smoke, and these units have a hard time staying clean. Here a 4-pack coast back to Helena for another shove assignment as they pass Skyline. 4 helper sets were being used the week we were out here. |
