Grand Union.
A "grand union" on a railway refers to a location where two double-track lines cross, which also includes both connecting tracks on each corner and a total of 16 switches to allow a train from any direction to proceed through any other direction. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcar network has three full grand unions, at Bathurst St / King St, Spadina Ave / Queen St, and Spadina Ave / King St, as well as numerous partial grand unions throughout the vast network. Here we see TTC Flexity Outlook no. 4516 (Bombardier, 2009-present) stopped at Bathurst St / King St while operating a Route 511 service to the Exhibition Loop; the full grand union laid out in the foreground with every connection visible.
