Unpacking The Eagle. On October 1, 2023, NJ Transit hosted a display of locomotives and private cars on loan from their owners. This was the first such event since the last "Hoboken Festival" over two decades ago. This event focused on NJT's heritage units, with several very interesting additions. NJ Transit assumed full responsibility for most of the commuter rail operations in New Jersey in 1983, inheriting directly from Conrail the operations previously run by Central Railroad of New Jersey, Erie Lackawanna (Erie & Delaware, Lackawanna & Western), and Penn Central (Pennsylvania Railroad). In front of JTCX 5711 (E8, formerly Pennsylvania Railroad), NJT workers uncrate a replica "Penn Station Eagle" that was placed as a photo prop during the day.
