Trains Get Longer. Unthinkable when the freight operation started with a few cars at a time a few years ago, NAUG 859 (GP9) brings its caboose and an astounding 28 empty cars north approaching the Route 8 bridge in Waterbury, Connecticut. On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 17, 2023, Genesee & Wyoming's Berkshire and Eastern Railroad (Formerly Pan Am Southern) PL-1 brought down 28 empty cars for the Naugatuck Railroad Freight and returned with 18 loads. The purchase of Pan Am Railways by CSX and subsequent division of assets and delegation of routes brought the Berkshire & Eastern Railroad into existence to operate lines separated out from CSX and Norfolk Southern operations. The Naugatuck Railroad, operator of this former Boston & Maine and originally New Haven Railroad line, has been operating Torrington Secondary with tourist passenger service since 1996 and added regular revenue freight to its portfolio in recent years.
