Remarks & Notes |
Norfolk Southern intermodal train 25G (Harrisburg, PA to 47th Street - Chicago) is seen passing MG tower as it grinds up the East Slope of the Alleghenies. The tower was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1944 to control new crossovers that were installed at this location to help with increasing traffic during World War 2. MG stands for "mid-grade" as it is approximately halfway up the climb to the summit in Gallitzin. The tower survived through the Penn Central era and most of the Conrail era before closing in 1994. NS was using the structure to house electronics for the color position light signals that stood here, however, once those were removed the building fell into disrepair. The future fate of the tower is uncertain as NS solicited bids to demolish the structure in 2021 but has not yet followed through. |
