Remarks & Notes |
2-8-2 tank steamlocomotive 940 # 001 of the Ferrovie dello Stato exhibited in the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milan. The FS 940 steam locomotives of the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) were tender locomotives designed for use on the lines in the Apennines.
The mountain railroads in the Apennines have tight curves and gradients of up to 27 ‰. They often run along slopes at risk of slipping, and the resulting low permissible axle loads limited the mass of the vehicles used. The class 851 locomotives used on the lines were no longer able to cope with the increased traffic, which is why FS 50 procured tender locomotives specially designed for these lines between 1922 and 1924, which were assigned to the Sulmona depot until the electrification of the Apennine lines and were mainly used on the Rome-Pescara and Orte-Ancona lines. The class 940 was considered a very successful design and remained in service until steam operation was discontinued. It was mostly used in front of freight trains, but also in front of passenger trains and in heavy shunting service. They had about 980 Hp and a maximum velocity of 65 km/h in both directions. |
