Passing over the freight yards of Long Island City below, New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R36WF cars 9440 and 9441 are seen in a World's Fair Local train on the IRT Flushing Line. Car 9440 bears the name of the State of Rhode Island - other cars were adorned with the name and/or seal of other states, including Massachusetts and Kansas - presumably as part of a sponsorship deal, though information explaining this is not readily available online. The cars were built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1964, with the first entering service just in time for the World's Fair of the same year.
This view was taken near the end of Crane St in Long Island City, looking east at the Flushing Line. The white building in the background is the former Sunshine Biscuit Factory, now LaGuardia Community College. The low brown building under the el structure existed at 45-57 Davis St until 2018, when it was demolished and the site redeveloped. The tall brown building is now Citywide Self Storage, which now has a sign painted over the windows and architectural details at the top floor.
