Wisconsin Central train 49 pounds over the Wisconsin & Southern crossing at Slinger, Wisconsin, on April 14, 1997. A reminder of the past is the structure on the right that the westbound WC train is passing. It advertises locally-famous Storck Brewery built in 1868 in Schleisingersville (later shortened to Slinger, thankfully). The brewery finally closed in 1958 and most of the brewery complex was eventually torn down in the following years, except the lone surviving structure, the kegging house seen in this photo. Interestingly, during the U.S. Prohibition from 1920 to 1933, Storck officially made ice creme, but still produced beer on the sly. Fathers would take their children down to Storck, treating them to some really good ice creme, while discreetly having a brew or two.
