In the last few weeks, Montana Rail Link has been doing some housecleaning before the BNSF takeover at the end of the year. Several locomotives were scrapped at Livingston, including EMD SD45 Nos. 346, 351 and 382—leaving only one SD45 still on the property—MRL No. 355. The venerable locomotive is currently being used on a work train on the east end of the railroad.
On October 8, 2023, Montana Rail Link SD45 No. 355 was assigned to a ballast train that was going to dump rock later that afternoon in the railroad’s large yard at Laurel, Montana. Remote MRL SD40-2XR No. 256 switches cars a couple tracks over.
