Penn Central Day. February 1, 1968 is a notable day in railroad history, as the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads merged to form the “Pennsylvania New York Central Transportation Company”, later shortened to simply “Penn Central”. A modern recreation of this combo occurred during the Heritage Units at Spencer event at the N.C. Transportation Museum on July 4, 2012, Norfolk Southern Corp 8102 (Pennsylvania, ES44AC) and 1066 (New York Central, SD70ACe) sit behind 1073 (Penn Central, SD70ACe) on the turntable. It’s not hard to imagine that these paint schemes were frequently side by side during the PC era as railroad of origin and current paint scheme took a back seat to daily operations in the struggle to survive.
