MORRIS KS Sept 29 1979 — Santa FE C30-7 8019 traverses the HiLine with a TOFC train. GE built the unit (s/n 41672) in December 1977 with an air conditioning unit mounted in the nose, 74:18 gear ratio and painted blue body with yellow warbonnet livery. In 1985 it was regeared to 83:20. Between July 31 1985 and July 24 1986 as part of the proposed merger of Southern Pacific and Santa Fe in was painted in red body, yellow warbonnet, black roof and black frame livery. It got SPSF reporting marks but retained its 8019 number. Santa Fe traded the unit to GE in 1989. GE leased it to Santa Fe on August 19 1991. In June 1992 it was Laid Up Bad Ordered in Topeka KS. Still in SPSF livery it was retired in November 1992. Sometime before Nov 11 1994 it was sold to Conrail and intended to be renumbered CRL 507. It was eventually scrapped sometime after 1996 by either Pilet Brothers or Cycle Systems. My photo.
Aside from Warbonnets and Chiefs, Santa Fe was a workaday railroad like any other. This album showcases that less glamorous--but no less vital--side of the famous ATSF.
