Remarks & Notes |
Better Than 194 Steps. The World Famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania is a busy thoroughfare for both Norfolk Southern and Amtrak. Home to a park in the middle of the curve that allows railfans to visit a fenced in area to observe and photograph the famously busy rail traffic through the landmark, it is 288 feet from the Visitors' Center to the peak. A meet of the funicular cars that take visitors between the two points on August 8, 2015 shows one of the two switches with the cable operated railway. The cars are painted in a Pennsylvania Railroad tribute scheme as a nod to the original railroad operator with the number "1854" affixed to denote the year that the route opened. Although out of service since 2020, repairs are underway according to the Railroaders Memorial Museum. |
