Phase VII Standard Cab. An unusual test train was operated out of Amtrak's Albany-Rensselaer Shop on Monday, March 18, 2024. Testing various upgrades, including PTC installation, Train 863 was getting ready to depart the yard with Phase VII painted AMTK 740 (GP38-3) leading. This is the first time that it has led on a train since arriving on the property as part of a large group of overhauled GP38-3s to enhance Amtrak's non-revenue fleet. Amtrak recently announced that this will be its new paint scheme for all locomotives, and will be applied to P42DCs and other units as they require repainting.
