An SBB "Giruno" high-speed train RABe 501, together with a second train of the same series in multiple control, crosses the 127 meter long and 53 meter high Chärstelenbach bridge at Amsteg on the Gotthard mountain line, en route as Eurocity 318 from Milan to Zurich. In the foreground are the imposing buildings of the Amsteg I hydroelectric power station, which was built by the SBB in 1923 for the electrification of the Gotthard line. With 6 Pelton turbines, it had a peak output of 52 MW. Since the commissioning of the Amsteg II power station in 1998, which is completely hidden inside the mountain, the plant has been decommissioned and is a listed building. The machine hall with turbines and generators in the large building in the foreground has been completely preserved and renovated, and the decommissioned pressure pipes are still in place too.
