Almost 40 years after Pininfarina's designs, the shape, color and design of the SBB's Re 460 locomotive is still modern and timelessly elegant. SBB first awarded a development contract to the SLM/BBC consortium for a new four-axle electric locomotive in 1985. A specification sheet was drawn up jointly by 1987, which also represented the industry's offer.
SBB ordered a first series of 12 locomotives for passenger services at the end of 1987, followed by a second series of a further 12 locomotives in mid-1989. The 119 locomotives finally built are still the backbone of long-distance transportation with single and double-decker push-pull trains. The Re 460 # 058 pulls the IC 481 from Singen (Hohentwiel)/Germany via Schaffhausen to Zurich, between Lottstetten and Rafz.
