BN's test of its former Frisco GP50's proved they were the right locomotive for the job, and made the decision to purchase 53 more. They rolled out of La Grange in BN's new high-visibility orange-nosed paint scheme, making a noticeable difference on the point of trains. The final five units of the order, 3158-3162, were delivered in November 1985 with a unique enlarged cab, never seen before or since. The cab was intended to more comfortably accommodate a crew in anticipation of the coming cabooseless era. To do this, the cab was lengthened to eight feet overall by pushing the front wall forward into the nose area by 23 inches. The 3162 was the last GP50 EMD built, as the GP60 demonstrators had rolled out the previous month.
