Remarks & Notes |
A westbound Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern trackage train has departed the Union Pacific yard just north of here and is seen rolling along the riverfront in downtown Mankato. Just out of frame to the right is "Reconciliation Park" that helps preserve the memory of the largest mass execution in American history that took place near this spot on December 26, 1862 when 38 Dakota men were hanged following the US-Dakota conflict that broke out that September. It's a tragic chapter of our country's history of which every American should be aware. It was the subsequent removal of the Dakota people from the Minnesota River valley west of here that allowed continued settlement and eventual railroad construction to progress in the decades that followed. The mural to the left on the flood control wall depicts the Minnesota River valley as it once looked and the mural on the grain silos in the distance shows Dakota children dancing in ceremonial dress. |
