This is Nebraska? Within the 94,000 acre Oglala National Grassland in western Nebraska is the stark and other-worldly Toadstool Geologic Park located northwest of the town of Crawford. Just east of the park is BNSF’s Butte Subdivision main line that also crosses Crawford Hill southwest of this location. Late in the afternoon of June 27, 2024, in a view from a trail in the park, a westbound coal empty rolls through Joder, past an unique landscape that at first glance, doesn’t say “Nebraska”.
