Remarks & Notes
The final Amtrak ‘Southwest Chief’ passes the iconic Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe upper quadrant semaphore signals near Cerrillios New Mexico on 16 August 2024. Shortly after this photo was taken, a signal crew dismantled this signal to allow for a modern, more efficient, and more reliable replacement of the signal system on this stretch of steel highway. The next Southwest Chief which ran here some 18 hours later would eschew the old track warrants for brand new Centralized Traffic Control between Madrid and Lamy.
