Bars and Batteries.
London Underground battery-electric locomotive 49 is seen hauling engineering train 642 through Covent Garden Station on the Piccadilly Line, working its way back to Ruislip Depot from a job site at Arnos Grove. The locomotive is one of the newest on the Underground fleet, having been built by Doncaster Works in 1973-4. At left is a "bar and disk" roundel, which were first introduced on the Underground in 1908 to help passengers distinguish station names from advertising panels. Nowadays this is one of few bar and disk roundels left in the Tube, and is one of four different styles of station name visible here. |
