"S Car Shove Move"
As two trains pass by on the late night of July 16th, 2024, the conductor of Metro-North Extra 102 stands on the point of Kawasaki M8 S railcar #9582, ready to guide a shove move at Stamford Station on the New Haven Line. 9582 and two other "S" cars are returning to Stamford Yard after receiving wheel work at the New Haven Yard Wheel Mill.
M8 '"S" (Single) cars are non-powered, with no traction motors, dynamic braking, or operating cab. The pantograph and third rail shoes only draw power to charge a battery box that supplies power to HVAC, lights, and other systems. In revenue service, these cars are positioned between two regular married M8 pairs in an "A/B-S-A/B" configuration but can be coupled directly to other "S" cars for non-revenue moves such as the one pictured.
