The cool, crisp air of the Animas Canyon is ruled by the sounds of the raging Rio de Las Animas. It rules the night air here, drowning out much of anything else.
But, one night in September 2024, it was dethroned briefly as the sounds of a narrow gauge steam locomotive once again returned to the pre-dawn hours, its mournful whistle overpowering the raging river below.
Soon though, this train powered through, leaving the canyon back to its normal solitude until the daylight returned with the normally scheduled daylight trains.
Shot during the Durango and Silverton's Fall Photographer's Special with lighting provided by Lerro Photography (though the background and river were provided by the near full moon).
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
